About us

Jensen Lumber Company has traced the beginnings of its lumber business to at least 1900 when the lumberyard operated in York, Nebraska, as National Lumber Company. Sometime in the early 1900’s, E.S. Clarke, owner and manager, changed the name to E.S. Clarke & Co. In 1913, Elijah A. Levitt, a Russian immigrant who had come to America to get an education, began working at E.S. Clarke & Co. Prior to World War I, Lige Levitt became part owner and upon returning from the service, purchased the lumber yard. He owned and operated the yard until 1979.

The business was originally located where the City of York office building now exists. The business relocated to its current site in the 1960s.  At the age of 94, in 1978, Lige hired Ken Jensen to work for him.  One year later, Ken and his father, Hervey Jensen, purchased E.S. Clarke and Co. from Lige Levitt. Ken recruited his wife, Bev, to work with him in the business. In 1980, the Jensen’s changed the lumberyard name to Jensen Lumber Co. Mike Finke came to work in 1981; two years later he became store manager, and in 1987 became part owner, and continues to manage the store.

In 2005, Ken’s son Drew Jensen began working in the company after completing his education in business and structural engineering. Drew and his wife Jane, also a York native, became partial owners in 2006 and are both currently involved in the daily operations of the company. Currently Jensen Lumber Co. is active in commercial contracting and the retail lumber business in the York area. One thing that has remained the same throughout the years is our commitment to service.
